Hunter Community Housing welcomes the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) that has passed Parliament, paving the way for new social and affordable homes to be built.
This investment into social and affordable housing has been a long time coming. It’s a welcome injection of support for people in our communities who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Under the HAFF, 30,000 new homes will be built over five years. Separate from the HAFF, the government announced an additional $2 billion in June.
Changes made to the HAFF include a guarantee that at least $500 million will be spent per year from the fund, while a minimum of 1,200 homes will be built in each state and territory across the five-year period, to ensure the funding is shared across the country.
Hunter Community Housing urges both Federal and State Governments to act swiftly and confirm timelines for when construction will begin.
There is no time to waste. According to the national advocacy campaign, Everybody’s Home, there’s a shortfall of 640,000 social homes across Australia.
